Porcelain

Porcelain tiles are fired at high temperatures making them stronger and harder than other ceramic tiles.  They are extremely wear-resistant and absorb less water than other ceramic tiles so they are an excellent choice for high-traffic areas or areas exposed to moisture.

Ceramic vs Porcelain

In general, Porcelain tile is harder and more durable than Ceramic tile.  Porcelain is made of very fine sand “slip” and fired at very high heat making it closer to a glass than a clay-fired product.  This hardness makes it a long wearing and dependable product.  Also, Porcelain has a much lower water absorption rate making it frost-resistant.  Ceramic tile is easier to cut than Porcelain which requires professional-grade tools and equipment.  And with Porcelain, instead of thinset, a multi-purpose or latex acrylic thinset mortar is required to ensure proper adhesion. This can make installation somewhat more expensive.
